Calls for more scrutiny over Gateshead FC play-off rejection
Liberal Democrat councillors have called for greater scrutiny over council bosses' role in the saga that saw Gateshead FC barred from the National League play-offs.
Supporters of Gateshead Football Club and football fans across the country have been massively let down by Gateshead Council. As we now know the Council's refusal to guarantee that Gateshead FC can play at Gateshead Stadium into the future has led the English Football League to remove the team from the playoffs.
Cllr. Ron Beadle, who leads the Council's opposition Liberal Democrats said: "Gateshead Football Club have been winners all season but their reward has been removed by the losers who lead Gateshead Council.
The Council is reviewing the future of Gateshead Stadium but should have guaranteed the football club's future by including their use of the Stadium as a condition for any transfer of ownership.
The fact that we are only finding out about this now, nearly two months after the EFL needed a decision, shows utter contempt for residents and councillors, who are elected to take decisions like this and were not informed."
