Councillor Sowerby With School Council

Birtley Lib Dem councillor, Joe Sowerby, “A new school term saw me invited back to discuss with the students about Democracy and the role of a councillor in our communities.”

Having previously visited in summer 2024, councillor Sowerby learned of the children's ambitions to understand Gateshead Council and introduced them to ‘the life of a councillor and the democratic process'.  Visiting again in the new school year 2024, Joe continues, "The children were fully engaged with my new talk on why democracy is important, showing examples related to school life.

The children applied the democratic process to a real life example: 'If Mrs Watson (head teacher) decided homework was now to be completed 5 days a week, who would find this unfair?'. “Safe to say every hand in the hall was raised” Joe quips. “Pointing out to students that if we do not stand up for what we believe in, democracy doesn't progress. They learned that if 10%, or 50% of people hadn't raised their hands, this still shows that a majority have decided an answer."

Joe's visit also touched on how democracy is a pillar of the ‘British Values’ system and is what makes the United Kingdom a welcoming place for all… everyone’s voices are heard.

Highlights of Joe's schools visits usually end with a humorous Q&A by the students, with this session being no different. “Questions such as “Do you remember the day you were elected? to which I answered, I can do better than that, giving the time on the day (early AM), much to the students amazement” Joe chuckles.

Joe continues, “Using election materials from my own campaign, I showed the students what a successful election outside the school is like and how standing for something you believe in, rather than because your family or friends vote certain ways… is right for the school and community”

Mrs Watson was grateful as ever invited Councillor Sowerby back for the school council elections and meeting with the new councillors in the coming months.

“As always I thank the staff, the students and the community as a whole for being supportive and encouraging in my role” - Councillor Joe Sowerby
