Birtley Students Want a Fair Deal
Students agree; if we do not stand up for what we believe in, a democracy doesn't progress!
On a bright morning, the newest Liberal Democrat Councillor for Birtley ward, Joe Sowerby, was invited to speak to the school council by head teacher Mrs. N. Watson, with the aim of providing students with an insight into the life of a councillor and the democratic process.
The children were brimming with curiosity, posing a variety of questions. One of the first questions asked was whether the councillor had their picture displayed anywhere, a practice common in the school to recognise notable individuals.
Students were also keen to know the frequency and locations of council meetings.
However, the standout question of the day was, "Do you get snacks and juice at council meetings?" This elicited a smile from the councillor, who had to inform the students that, unfortunately, no snacks or juice are provided during these meetings.
In an exciting development, the school has invited Joe to return in September to deliver an assembly on democracy and how to run a successful campaign. This visit will coincide with the school council elections, providing a timely lesson on the importance of participation and effective campaigning. Joe said "I thank the school for believing in me and the return invite.. I am very enthusiastic about the upcoming engagement, eager to further educate and inspire the students who seem to be budding politicians".
Reflecting on the visit, the Joe shared, "It was great to see children take an interest and being engaged when talking about politics. I would like to thank the whole school and the school council for having me in to meet them."
The visit was a resounding success, fostering a sense of curiosity and engagement in the young students about the democratic process and the responsibilities of a councillor.
